Before you can start using digital signage, you need to have a basic understanding of what it is and what it does. Digital signage consists of electronic display panels that are mounted on walls or other structures. The content is displayed on the display panels using a special type of digital computer monitor. It is important that you understand the different components of this simple to use technology if you are going to use digital signage for your company’s benefit.

What are the key components to this puzzle? There are several key components to a digital signage system, but these will cover only some of them: the hardware, the display hardware: monitors (either digital monitors or plasma screens), keypad control units, wireless network hardware, mounts, and software. Digital signage also utilizes digital sign software, which is used to manipulate the digital displays and to gather information from the displays.

Digital signage can be of three types: electronic paper, digital-to-electric display (DET) and electronic paper display (EPD). Electronic paper signage (also called electronic billboards) consist of a message display panel with an electronic paper display – typically, an LCD or plasma screen. Most electronic signage displays include optional lighting options such as LED lights. A typical electronic signage display consists of a sender board, message displays, digital message panels, lighting solutions and a control station.

Digital Signage systems usually come complete with a software player. This player allows the users to manage and change the content being displayed on the digital screens. The software players can be accessed by a computer terminal or by a Personal Computer (PC). They can control the digital signage displays by editing text, adjusting color, changing the size of the message and changing the style of the displays.

A major advantage of the digital signage solution is that it eliminates the need for media players and other software. Media players add costs and have to be loaded with additional software and hardware. Also media players require periodic updates and cannot be disabled while on standby mode. On the other hand digital displays do not require any software and can be left unattended. They can be left on indefinitely.

The next advantage is that digital signage screens are portable. They can be placed anywhere. For example, these screens can be used to promote a business when placed in a location where there are a lot of passersby. Digital signage displays can also be placed in waiting rooms and hospital examination rooms, which do not have TV or any other media player. Digital signage displays can even be mounted in parking lots, near streets and airports, in shopping malls, and anywhere people are likely to look.

As for the design of the digital signage, a digital content server acts as the server where the content is stored and is controlled from. This digital content server also allows users to upload their own content and videos onto the screens. There is a pay-per-download model available if users wish to limit the number of advertisements they have to see.

Lastly, digital signage displays have an effective feature of attracting attention to certain content. For example, movie theatres screen advertisements from sponsors and this generates revenue for the theatre. Digital signs can even contain videos and music, so that the advertisements can be integrated into the content. As a result, digital signs can create a positive impact on the bottom lines of a business. It is therefore a good idea to invest in digital signage solutions to boost the chances of making more sales.
